Chapter 85
Anticipating her hesitation, Zark said, “I can assure you, any personal issues will be completely separate from my professional dealings with your uncle.”
“Are you sure?” Ashley asked.
“Absolutely.”
Ashley knew her uncle’s company was struggling. After a moment’s pause, she said, “Okay.”
“Let me know when you’re free, and I’ll arrange a time to meet.”
“Great, she replied.
Zark noticed her hair, which was slightly disheveled from the wind. “It’s cold tonight. Get inside.”
Ashley froze. The words were identical to what Chase had spoken earlier.
She nodded silently, getting into her car. Zark didn’t move. As her car passed him, she rolled down the window, gave a curt nod, and sped off.
Only after her car disappeared did Zark get into his own.
Ashley returned to the Joneses’. Amanda and her uncle were still awake, though Sheldon and Henry had retired to their rooms.
They all looked at her as she entered. Clearly, they were waiting for her.
“Ashley, Amanda said.
“Mm-hmm.”
Amanda extended a hand. Ashley put down her bag and sat beside her. Amanda took her hand.”Ashley, are you planning to let go of Chase?” Ashley’s change in demeanor toward Chase was impossible to miss.
Yes, Ashley said.”We’re getting a divorce.”
Amanda smiled.”Good, that’d be the best.” Then, her brow furrowed.”Sam is very attached to Chase, and he’s been quite good to him these past two years. He probably won’t give you custody…”
Ashley didn’t want custody of Sam, but she didn’t say so.”I know. I’ll talk to him. It’s late. Let’s all get some rest.”
The Joneses went to bed, but Ashley couldn’t rest. Burke and Tim had a lengthy discussion on their way home. As Ashley reached her room, she received a message from Tim. It was a project assignment. He added, “Professor Burke’s request. Due by 6 AM tomorrow.”
Ashley took a drink of water, replying, “Got it.”
Without removing her makeup or showering, she immediately started working. Around 4:30 AM, she finished, sending Tim the completed work.
Tim was up all night, too. He replied, “He wants us at his place by 9 AM.”
“Okay.”
They ended their brief exchange. Ashley went to the bathroom to remove her makeup and take a shower. By the time she was finished, it was already 530 AM. She set her alarm for 8 AM before turning off the lights and going to bed.
When she was woken up by the alarm clock, she was weak all over, but she dragged herself out of bed. Downstairs, her grandmother noticed her fatigue. “Why didn’t you sleep longer?”
I have to go to the professor’s.”
Mrs. Sterling knew how demanding Burke was with his students.”I’m not comfortable with you driving like this. Let the driver take you.”
“Okay.”
At Burke’s villa, the three of them went straight to his study and worked. It wasn’t until lunchtime that they finally took a breather. Ashley’s phone rang. It was Cindy. She asked if she wanted to go skiing in the afternoon.
Ashley replied via voice message, “I’m busy today. Enjoy yourself.”
