Emily had also noticed Ashley’s lack of interest towards Chase. Sighing, she glanced at him. “It’s all Chase’s fault!” Ashley had loved him for so long, and he hadn’t responded. Of course she’d give up.

Chase merely smiled faintly. Ashley remained silent, eating her dinner.

A call came for Chase. He left to answer but returned quickly. After dinner, he told Emily, “I have something to do. I’ll be going.”

Sam, sensing the call was from Tanya, wanted to visit her.”Daddy, I’m coming too.”

“Okay.”

Emily said, Take Ashley with you. It’s Saturday. She needs some fresh air.”

Ashley said, Grandma, I’m meeting a friend.”

“Oh, okay.”

Sam was relieved. He said goodbye to Ashley as they left. Chase’s car sped off. Ashley left, too.

Once out of sight, she called Tim. “I’m divorcing Chase. He gave me a divorce agreement; he’s giving me some assets. I need a lawyer to check for loopholes.”

Tim, at dinner, was elated. “I’ll find you a good one!”

“Great.”

She drove home.

At the hospital, Chase and Sam were with Tanya. Ethan was outside on the phone with Zark.

“Chase’s divorcing Ashley,” he said.

Zark was out of town. He was clearly surprised.”What? Are you sure?”

“Of course! I was there! And he’s not giving her custody of Sam.”

Zark gripped his phone. Ethan was about to continue when Zark interrupted.”I have something to do. I’ll call you back.” He hung up.

“What’s so urgent?” Ethan mumbled.

After thinking for a while, Zark called Ashley.

Ashley had just arrived home. She answered, “Mr. Green, what’s up?”

He hesitated; it was inappropriate for him to inquire about her and Chase. He couldn’t even ask if she was doing okay.

Ashley thought he called her for Betty, so she said, “If it’s about Betty, I’m busy tomorrow. How about the day after or next week?” Tim had arranged a lawyer for tomorrow. She needed to finalize the divorce.

Zark didn’t correct her.”Okay.”

Ashley waited for him to hang up, but he didn’t, she asked, “Mr. Green, anything else?”

He sensed her calmness. Was she really okay, or just suppressing her emotions? He didn’t respond immediately. She asked again, “Mr. Green? Are you there?”

He replied, “Yes.”

‘Anything else? I have things to do.”

“Okay.”

She hung up. Her professor, impressed by her recent work, asked her to submit it to a reputable journal after review. She wanted to complete as soon as possible.

She put down her phone and opened her laptop.

Zark called Ethan. “Chase wants a divorce and custody? She must have refused. Will they go to court?”

“No! She agreed! To the divorce and custody! She agreed calmly. I was baffled!”

Zark was surprised; it was unlike Ashley. He didn’t think she’d give up Sam’s custody easily. It didn’t make sense.
