Zark knew the location of the cake shop. After Ashley left, he didn’t go there. He got into his car and called Ethan. “Ethan, I’m back. I have a flight to catch later. Check if Chase’s free. If not, meet me at the hospital to see Tanya.”

Ethan was astonished. “You’re back? When did you get back?”

Zark ignored the question.”Call Tanya first. See if she’s available.”

Ethan wanted to ask why Zark wasn’t calling them himself, but then he figured Zark was busy, so he agreed.

Chase wasn’t free. Zark bought flowers and a fruit basket before meeting Ethan at the hospital.

Zark replied casually, “To handle some things.” She touched the flowers, saying, “Oh…” Was he really back for work, or to see her? While he wasn’t there when she got injured, his visit showed his consideration.

Ashley stayed at Amanda’s. She woke early the next day, feeling good. She went downstairs.

I called Mommy yesterday, wanting her to make dinner for me, but she didn’t answer. I called twice more, and then it said her phone was off.”

“She probably turned it off,” Chase said.

“Oh? No battery?”

“What do I do? I want to go skiing; Mommy promised to take me when she was free.” He’d wanted to go with Tanya but she was injured. Now, with Tanya recovering, he wanted to ski with his mother. But his mother wasn’t taking his calls.

‘Call her later. She’ll probably turn it back on.”

Sam mumbled, “Okay…”

Ashley wouldn’t leave her phone off; she had things to discuss with Tim and expected a call from Mr. Plunkett. After half an hour, she turned it back on. Sam called her immediately. Ashley ignored it, working on her paper. Sam, seeing his father preparing to leave, asked him to call Ashley.

Chase called Ashley; she hung up. He said, “Your mother didn’t answer my call either,”

“She must be busy. She didn’t see it,” Sam said.
