Chapter 125

When Sam was not around, Ashley smiled faintly to Chase.”We’re almost divorced.”

Kelly’s mother had guessed it. After all, Ashley was married with a son but living alone across the street from her. Especially, it was not Ashley who went to the previous parent-teacher meeting.

Chase greeted Kelly’s mother, Hello.”

“Hello… she replied.

Chase looked at Ashley. “Do you two know each other?”

Although the question was directed at Kelly’s mother, his gaze remained fixed on Ashley. Ashley ignored him, but Kelly’s mother said, “We’re neighbors.”

Sensing the tension, and Ashley’s obvious unwillingness to talk to Chase, Kelly’s mother quickly found an excuse to leave.

Chase commented, “Seems you get along well with your new neighbor.”

Ashley looked down at her phone. He didn’t press it further.

Sam returned, and the activity was about to begin. Ashley had participated in similar events when Sam was in kindergarten, but not after Sam left with Chase last year.

The first game was “Chair Grab.”

The rules: Chairs were arranged in a circle, two fewer than the number of participating families. Parents and children circled the chairs to music. When the music stopped, they had to grab a chair. Families without a chair were eliminated. The last family remaining won.

Chase looked at Ashley.”You or me?”

Before Ashley could say anything, Sam said, “Daddy, come on!”

Chase looked at Ashley.”What do you

think?”

“Go ahead, Ashley said.

Here, Chase offered her his phone.”Use this to film.”

Ashley didn’t take it.”I’ll use my phone and send you the video later.”

Chase didn’t insist. He held Sam, joining the other parents around the chairs. Ashley stood there, aiming the camera at Chase and Sam. Chase glanced at her, smiling. Ashley froze.

The music started. Chase, with a relaxed smile, moved with the other parents. When the music stopped, he easily secured a chair for himself and Sam. Sam, thrilled, waved to Ashley.”Mommy, we got a chair!”

Ashley responded, “I see!”

When reviewing the schedule, Ashley had expected Chase and Sam to find the games boring. But Sam got excited just being held by Chase. Winning made him even happier.

Chase smiled, looking at Ashley. She knew that he was not enthusiastic about the game at first, but the upbeat music and competitive spirit seemed to draw him in. He was enjoying himself.

Chase was quick-witted, securing victory after several rounds.

Sam excitedly ran to Ashley for a high-five “Mommy, we won!”

Ashley high-fived him.”Yes!”

Chase approached. Did you get it all?”

“Yes,” Ashley replied, sending him the video.
