Chapter 130

Jeffery didn’t see this as shameful; he believed he could have secured the Eternal project legitimately, but his personal issues with Ashley were blocking his path. He didn’t care about those personal issues.
Since there was a faster way closing the deal, he wouldn’t hesitate to use it.
“I was thinking of taking a break soon, but now I’ve changed my mind. I don’t want to risk shortening my lifespan by coming back and seeing you.”
Derek hung up. He didn’t mention Ashley again. Sometimes, an easy life wasn’t good for growth.
He then called Ashley. Seeing the caller, Ashley’s expression changed a bit. She answered it, “Uncle Derek.”
Derek chuckled. “You’re smart. You know why I’m calling.”
“Yes.”
Though she’d guessed his intention, he still asked, “Can you agree to collaborate with Jeffery? Consider it a favor I owe you.”
Business was business. Even enemies could collaborate for mutual benefits. Ashley and Jeffery weren’t enemies, but she didn’t want to compromise easily, as she wasn’t at fault. It was okay for her to say yes to Derek, but…
Derek said gently, “No rush, Ashley. You can call me when you’ve decided.”
“Okay, Ashley replied.
Derek added, “Regarding Jeffery, deal with him as you see fit. You don’t need to be nice to him for my sake.”
I understand,” Ashley said.
Impressed by her honesty, Derek laughed.”Alright, I’m gonna get out of your hair. See you next time.”
“Okay, goodbye.”
After hanging up, Ashley called Burke, but no one answered.
Burke called her back half an hour later.”What’s up?”
Ashley explained the situation.
Burke said, “Not everyone can make Derek owe a favor. Think carefully.” It was an affirmation of Derek’s character.
Ashley replied, Okay, I understand. Thank you, Professor.”
‘Mm-hm. Burke hung up.
Ashley didn’t reply to Derek until the next morning. Derek had expected this, as well as her call to Burke.
Hearing her response, he said warmly, “Great. Thank you, Ashley.”
“You’re welcome.”
Derek sighed. His colleague chuckled. “What’s up, Commander?”
Derek sat down.”‘I want a daughter.”
“But your wife is past the age of bearing children. Your son is of marrying age. A daughter-in-law is more practical.”
Derek grumbled,…I can’t count on my son.”
Jeffery arrived at Eternal that afternoon. Ashley had already informed Tim about Derek’s call. Tim kept Jeffery waiting for over an hour before seeing him. Jeffery was serious about the collaboration; his new proposal was even better than the last. Tim remained cold, though.”Let’s work together.”
