Chapter 2
Ashley repacked the gifts she’d brought for Sam.
Then, she prepared the divorce papers.
It wasn’t until the early hours of the next morning that Chase and Sam returned.
They froze upon seeing Ashley sitting on the sofa.
Sam, still young, couldn’t hide his feelings.
His previously happy smile instantly fell, and he complained in a small voice, “Why is Mommy here? We’re supposed to go watch the meteor shower with Auntie Tanya later.”
Chase patted Sam’s head, ushering him to his room.
Then, he turned to Ashley, his tone cool.
“Why did you come suddenly? You didn’t even give any notice.”
A bitter taste filled Ashley’s mouth.
This was supposed to be her home, yet she felt like an outsider, needing to announce her return in advance.
Seven years of marriage had extinguished every spark of romantic hope she’d once held.
Taking a deep breath, she produced the divorce papers and handed them to Chase.
Chase, let’s get a divorce.”
Her voice was flat, as if discussing the weather.
Chase, engrossed in texting Tanya, didn’t really hear what she said.”Okay,” he mumbled.
Ashley flipped the agreement to the last page, handed it to him along with a pen, pointing to the signature line.”Sign here.”
“Sure, he replied, not even glancing at the document.
Ashley took back the papers. Chase, I’m leaving now.”
Til drive you to the airport,” he said, not looking up. As he walked towards the door, he added casually, “Next time, handle it yourself.
There’s no need to fly all the way just to get my signature on a business contract.”
Only then did Ashley realize Chase had totally missed what she said and thought this was about signing a business document.
Throughout their years of marriage, he had always treated her this way-cold, distant, impatient.
She’d grown accustomed to it.
Had it not been for that night’s accident and his family’s pressure, he would never have married her.
But thankfully, it was almost over,
A wry smile touched her lips as she turned and walked out.
Once in the car, she saw Tanya in the back seat.
Ashley sat in silence, staring out the window.
In the back, Tanya spoke softly to Sam, Chase responding occasionally in a low, indulgent tone Ashley had never heard before.
She had never experienced his tenderness or affection in front of others, yet today she saw it bestowed upon another woman.
What a perfect little family they made.
She lowered her gaze, unconsciously tracing her wedding ring. Seven years, and it had never held any real meaning.
Suddenly, a screech of tires tore through the rain!
The impact sent the world spinning. The airbag slammed into her face, a metallic tang of blood filling her mouth. She lifted her head, peering through the shattered window, seeing Chase scoop Tanya into his arms and run into the rain, Sam close behind.
No one looked back at her.
Rain mingled with blood, blurring her vision. She opened her mouth to call out, but no sound escaped. She just watched them go.
Vaguely, she felt herself being pulled from the wreckage.
She’s breathing! Get a stretcher!”
The harsh fluorescent lights of the hospital corridor stung her eyes.
“Both are Rh-negative. The blood bank only has enough for one!” the doctor’s urgent voice cut through the air.
“Save Tanya first, Chase said, his voice unwavering. “She can’t die.”
What about the other lady…?”
“It’s better if she dies!” Sam cried, his voice choked with sobs.”Then Aunt Tanya can be my mommy!”
Ashley wanted to laugh, but instead, she coughed up blood.
How ironic.
Her life meant less than a stranger’s to her husband and son.
