Chapter 391.

It was past ten by the time Ashley finished work.
Fall had definitely arrived. It had been raining the past couple of days, and the temperature had dropped quite a bit. Maybe she’d sat in front of the computer too long and caught a chill from the draft. The moment she closed her laptop and got up to shower, a sudden shiver ran through her, followed by a flurry of sneezes.
After her shower, she came out with a runny nose and a dry, burning sensation in her throat.
Realizing she might be catching a cold, and knowing it was too late for the old mansion’s staff, Ashley headed downstairs herself to make some honey ginger tea to ward off the chill.
Just as she finished her tea and got back upstairs, she heard Chase’s voice.”Still up?”
Ashley turned her head.”Almost in bed.”
She’d had the ginger tea and found some cold medicine downstairs, so her body felt warmer, much better.
But she was exhausted and didn’t have the energy to talk much.”I’m gonna head to bed now.”
With that, she turned to head back to Sam’s room and was out cold pretty fast.
She wasn’t sure how long she’d slept, but through her daze, Ashley thought she heard Sam’s voice.
“Mommy, you’re super hot!”
Soon after, other footsteps filled the room. Ashley tried to open her eyes, but her head felt so heavy and foggy she just drifted back to sleep.
When she finally woke up, all she felt was a throbbing headache, weakness, and her throat was on fire.
She wanted to get up and grab some water, but as soon as she moved, someone was there, steadying her.”Want some water first?”
Ashley blinked, then finally opened her eyes.
Standing right there in front of her was Chase.
Chase had already turned to pour her some water. In no time, he was handing her a glass. Ashley took it instinctively, about to thank him, when she realized her throat was so sore it hurt to even speak.
She’d barely had two sips of water when Chase turned and picked up the room’s internal phone.”Send up the porridge,” he said.
After those two sips, her mind finally cleared a bit. Ashley went to put the glass on the nightstand next to the bed, but then she froze again.
It hit her then: she wasn’t in Sam’s room right now. She was in Chase’s room.
Chase must have been taking care of her, because an open book lay on a small table nearby.
She was about to look away when Chase hung up the phone.”Ten minutes ago it was 103.6 F,” he said. “I’ve already sent someone to get Dr. Carter. He should be here in a few minutes.”
Ashley wanted to say something, but she noticed the sky outside the window was still dark and gloomy.
It seemed like it was still raining.
Thinking about it, she suddenly remembered she had a meeting that morning.”What time is it?” she couldn’t help but ask.
“Eight twenty.”
Pretty early.
She was just letting out a breath of relief when she heard Chase ask, “Want your phone?”
Ashley:”… Yeah.”
