Chapter 57
Emily frowned and looked at Chase, hoping he’d offer to drive Ashley.
But he just silently ate his breakfast, ignoring her unspoken request. Ashley lowered her head.
Seeing that, Emily gave up.
In fact, Ashley had no business lunch. She’d said that to avoid riding in Chase’s car and inconveniencing him.
The day passed without incident.
Ashley stayed at the office, working late until 9 pm, then drove herself home.
To her surprise, Chase was already home. In the past, he would’ve come home much later unless something came up.
He wasn’t in the bedroom. Ashley turned on the light and put down her bag. Just as she was about to check on Sam, she noticed a red booklet on her vanity.
Ashley froze. Although they shared a bedroom, the left side of the bed was Chase’s space, and she rarely went there. Similarly, the right side was hers, and he respected that boundary. Their personal belongings – wallets, watches, toiletries – were always kept separate and organized. There was no chance he’d misplaced this booklet.
She approached the vanity. It was a deed. Her heart leaped with a guess. Then, she opened it.
It was for the house across the street from her uncle’s. The deed clearly showed her name as the sole owner.
Before she could react, Chase entered the bedroom. Hearing his footsteps, she turned to him.”I saw the deed. Thank you,” she said sincerely.
Before he said anything, she added, “I don’t have that kind of money right now. I’ll pay you back later.”
Even in an old neighborhood, the villa was beautiful. Considering the sky-high real estate prices in the city, it could cost two or three million dollars. Ashley couldn’t afford it.
Chase, who had just arrived, loosened his tie. He seemed amused by her words, raising an eyebrow slightly.”You want to pay me back?”
Yes, I-‘
No need,” he said, setting his tie aside and then his watch.”It means nothing to me.” He then went into the bathroom.
Ashley stared at his back and was stunned, but she didn’t press the issue. After their marriage, she’d almost never asked him for anything to avoid being a burden. This house was the first thing he’d ever given her.
She considered it a memento of their soon-to-end marriage. With that thought, she placed the deed in a drawer.
After three busy days, Ashley finally had a less hectic schedule. She and Chase had both been busy, leaving little time for Sam. At lunchtime, Sam called, asking if Ashley was free; she hadn’t picked him up from school in a while.
Ashley had finished most of her work, so she left early that afternoon to pick up Sam. The boy wanted her to cook dinner, so after getting home, Ashley changed and went into the kitchen.
Emily was happy that Ashley was home early and even happier to see her cooking. She called Chase to tell him to come home for dinner.
He refused. Grandma, I still have work.”
Grandma was displeased, but then she smiled. After hanging up, she said to Ashley, “Ashley, why don’t you take dinner to Chase?”
Ashley hesitated. Grandma, if he’s busy, we shouldn’t bother him…”
“Even if he’s busy, he still needs to eat!”
‘Grandma…
Before Ashley could finish, Emily declared, “It’s settled!” She then instructed the housekeeper to prepare extra dishes. Ashley couldn’t argue
with that. But how could she deliver dinner when she didn’t know which office he was at? And even if she did, he probably had other plans after work. Her trip would probably be pointless.
Ashley found an opportunity to go upstairs and called Chase. After a while, he answered, “What’s up?”
