Zark said goodbye to Betty, then thanked Ashley.
You’re welcome.”

It was almost completely dark. The mountain path had lights, making it easy to go down. Ashley turned to leave. Zark followed, but they didn’t speak.
As they reached the resort, they ran into Tanya. Seeing them descending the mountain, one behind the other, Tanya froze, then tightened her lips.
Ashley ignored her, heading straight into the lobby. Tanya watched her go, then turned to Zark, frowning.”Zark, you…”
Zark said calmly, “We met on the mountain.”
Tanya knew he had been video-chatting with Betty and gone up to film the apple trees. If Ashley was also there, it was perfectly normal for them to
meet.
Tanya relaxed. Before she could speak, Zark asked, “Where are they?”
By the pavilion. The bonfire materials are ready; they’re waiting for you.”
Mm. They walked towards the pavilion side-by-side.
The bonfire feast included hot pot, mala chicken, and barbecue. The crab and fish maw chicken broth was simmering, the mala chicken was ready, and : ong table overflowed with premium, prepped ingredients. The bonfire blazed brightly.
Ethan and the others were already seated around it. Zark and Tanya arrived; Tanya naturally sat next to Chase. Ethan was enjoying the mala chicken. When he was about to dig in, he remembered Ashley. He looked at Sam.”Sam, go upstairs and tell your mom we have delicious food. Ask her to join
is.”
He knew Ashley would probably say no and continue staying in her room, but they had to go through the motions. Tanya understood. They’d done heir part; whether Ashley joined them was her choice.”Sam, go on,” she said.
am frowned; he really didn’t want his mom to join them. But he couldn’t refuse. As he was about to set down his drink, Chase spoke. “I’ll go.”
lence fell.
le got up and left.
than recovered, smiling.”Well… that’s gonna make it more sincere.” It seemed a bit perfunctory to send a child to invite Ashley.
Tanya had thought the same. Chase was just trying to appease Emily; his going upstairs didn’t mean he had feelings for Ashley.
le never liked her before and never would.
iam, however, pursed his lips, looking worried. He was afraid that if Chase asked, Ashley would say yes. Mom always listened to Dad; she couldn’t say 10 to him.
Meanwhile, Ashley, after ordering room service, opened her laptop. She’d been working for a short time when she heard the door open. She glanced up ind saw Chase entering with his keycard.
she assumed he was retrieving something, so she turned back to her work. He spoke. “There’s a bonfire feast downstairs. It’s lively. You wanna come down for a bir?”
She paused. Like Ethan, she thought he was just doing this for the sake of Emily. It meant nothing. And even if it did, she didn’t care.
‘I still have work,” she said. Looking at him, she added, “Don’t worry, I’ll cover for you if Grandma asks.”
