Chapter 65
Ashley cleaned up and prepared to shower. Chase and Sam hadn’t closed the door. Thinking Chase wouldn’t be back, she went to close it. Then, she saw him returning.
She stepped aside, assuming he was getting his luggage.
But he closed the door behind him. Clearly, he planned to stay.
Ashley froze. Before she could speak, he walked past her into the room. She caught the faint scent of Tanya’s perfume on him. And… there was a faint lipstick mark on the collar of his pajamas. He’d just showered and changed; the scent and mark were fresh. His lips looked a bit redder than before. Apparently, it was not a trick of the light.
He sat on the bed.
He was staying. This was unexpected.
But with Grandma’s spies around, it made sense that he wouldn’t be with Tanya. Tanya coming to look for him meant she didn’t trust him? She was worried something might happen?
Considering the perfume and the lipstick, they’d likely shared a passionate kiss.
Ashley stopped thinking.
Half an hour later, when she emerged from the shower, Chase was reading a book
–
a book of hers.
Her face fell; she disliked his presumption. Just as she was about to speak, he looked up. Noticing her expression, he said, “Do you mind?” She did mind, but the book didn’t contain any sensitive company information beyond her personal annotations, so she calmed down.”A little.”
He looked at her.”Okay, I’ll ask next time.”
Next time? She doubted if they would have another opportunity for sharing one room.
He returned to his reading, then commented, “Nice annotations.”
It was a compliment. But Ashley ignored it, grabbing her hairdryer.
She was done drying her air, and he was still reading. After her skincare routine, she lay down on her side of the bed.
He didn’t go to sleep immediately; she didn’t know when he did, because she fell asleep quickly.
The next morning, she woke early, as the sun was rising.
The other side of the bed was empty. The room was quiet. He was gone.
He’d left early… Perhaps he hadn’t slept here at all.
She had arranged to meet Tim at the office. After breakfast, she packed and left. As she opened the door, she heard Sam complain in the hall.”Aunt Tanya pissed me off! She said she’d sleep with me last night, but she went back to her own room after I fell asleep!”
He was complaining to the housekeeper. Ashley concluded Chase didn’t sleep with her, but with Tanya. They couldn’t even bear to part for a night…
Sam saw Ashley with her suitcase.”Mom?”
“Mm,” Ashley replied, closing the door.”Mom has work. I’m going back. You and Dad have fun.”
Sam nodded quickly, “Okay, Mom.”
Ashley went downstairs, encountering Chase and Tanya. Seeing her suitcase, he asked, “Leaving?”
Ashley said coldly, “Yes.”
‘Did you call a cab?”
“Yes.”
He didn’t try to stop her.”Okay.”
She left.
Ethan woke up late and joined Chase and the others for lunch.”Chase, why don’t you go upstairs and ask her to have lunch?” He was talking about Ashley.
Chase replied flatly, “No need. She left.”
Ethan raised an eyebrow.”She left?”
Zark was also surprised.
