Chapter 76
Years later, Vivian was as stunning and haughty as Ashley remembered. Therefore, her lecture, unlike the typical honeyed words of a stepmother, sounded genuine, and surprisingly persuasive. Someone as haughty as Vivian wouldn’t bother with petty conflicts with a stepdaughter; any friction would be the stepdaughter’s fault.
Vivian asserted that her relationship with Ashley’s mother and Mark wouldn’t affect Mark and Miranda’s feelings for Ashley.
Children crave parental love, especially after a divorce. Ashley, only eight or nine at the time, loved her parents and couldn’t bear to make a choice between them. In the end, she still leaned towards her poor mother. During the custody battle, even with Lucy’s mental instability, Ashley, ignoring Mark and Miranda’s pleas, chose to stay with her mother.
Even then, she still cared about Mark and Miranda.
But to avoid upsetting Lucy, she didn’t show it.
Over a year after the divorce, Miranda secretly contacted Ashley, wanting to see her.
Ashley, who was really missing her grandmother, secretly met her.
To her surprise, Tanya was also there. Miranda insisted they were sisters and should get along. Ashley refused, and Miranda’s reproachful gaze and accusation of her being just like her mother, made her question if she was a selfish child.
Over a decade later, Ashley still remembered that vividly.
She went to the bathroom with a broken heart. Upon returning, she saw Miranda holding two ice cream bars, one for her and one for Tanya. One bar had a chunk missing, slightly soiled by a passing waiter’s tray.
Tanya instantly picked the perfect one.
Miranda simply ruffled her hair, smiling without saying anything.
Then, she handed it to Ashley without mentioning the missing piece. The Mond family was wealthy; a thousand, even ten thousand ice cream bars would be nothing to them. Yet, Miranda didn’t bother to buy her a new one.
At that moment, Ashley realized Miranda’s love had changed. She would never forget Tanya’s malicious expression as she took the damaged ice cream.
Similar incidents involve Mark were countless.
Thinking of this, despite her indifference towards Chase, facing the seemingly kind Miranda and the sanctimonious Vivian, she smiled faintly. “You both claim to care about me, and I really want to believe you. But your concern seems to involve helping Tanya take my husband. Am I right?”
Miranda and Vivian showed no embarrassment. Perhaps they had anticipated her response.
Miranda sighed.
‘Ashley, you know the state of your relationship with Chase. Why force yourself to be with someone who doesn’t love you? A divorce will allow you to
start over. L…”
“You’re going to say you’re doing this for my own good, aren’t you?” Ashley interrupted, fixing her gaze on both women.
“You’ve said these empty words of concern so many times, aren’t you tired? You don’t even bother coming up with new lines. How am I supposed to believe you? Maybe next time, try a fresh script?”
Before they could respond, she continued, “But it probably wouldn’t work. Empty words mean nothing; actions speak louder than words, right?” Miranda and Vivian were taken aback. Miranda was about to speak, but Ashley interrupted her again, turning to Mr. Ford who was coming back. “Mr. Ford, are you finished? Shall we leave?”
Mr. Ford had noticed the strained atmosphere. He chuckled awkwardly. “Yes, of course.” He then said goodbye to Miranda and Vivian. “We shall take our
