Chapter 77
Once they were a safe distance away, Mr. Ford asked, “Is there some kind of misunderstanding between you and the Monds?” Tim and Ashley exchanged a glance. Ashley replied, “No.”
Because it wasn’t a misunderstanding; it was much more complicated. Mr. Ford, however, took her words at face value.
“Good,” he said, his tone turning serious. “Given Chase’s devotion to Miss Mond, the Mond family is about to rise to great heights. The Sterlings are not people we want to cross. Even if you don’t cultivate a close relationship with the Monds, you certainly don’t want to offend them.”
Ashley chuckled, finding the situation ironic. She was probably the only person in the world who was being advised to befriend and not offend her husband’s mistress because of her husband’s obsession with that mistress.
Tim couldn’t put up with that.”Eternal doesn’t fear Chase Sterling.”
Thanks to CUAP, their company enjoyed significant government protection. Chase hadn’t been able to target Eternal, and their current projects were, if Tim guessed correctly, about to receive substantial government support. Eternal would be able to increase in size by a wide margin within the next year, making them even more confident in the face of Chase.
His confidence did not appear without cause; he had Ashley’s help.
Amanda’s birthday was on Saturday.
Whether Chase attended or not was irrelevant to Ashley. But Sam definitely had to be there.
To prevent Sam from sneaking off to Tanya and becoming unreachable, Ashley called him on Thursday morning. It was her first initiative to contact Sam since returning to this country.
Sam was eating breakfast with Chase. He was delighted to see Ashley’s call, immediately setting down his utensils.”Mom!”
“Hmm, Ashley replied, hearing the muffled sound of chewing.”Having breakfast?”
“Yes! Have you eaten, Mom?”
Yes.” Ashley continued, “I’m calling to remind you that it’s your great-grandmother’s birthday on Saturday. You need go to her birthday party with me.
understand?”
“Ah…”
Sam hadn’t expected this call. He hadn’t been able to spend time with Aunt Tanya last weekend and had been looking forward to making up for it this week. This news was disappointing. But he couldn’t completely disobey his mother.
Ashley could sense his displeasure, knowing exactly what he was thinking. Gripping her phone, she asked, “Is your father there?”
Dad? Yes. Sam looked towards Chase.”Mom, do you want to talk to Dad?”
“Yes, give the phone to your father. I need to speak with him.”
“Okay. Sam handed the phone to Chase.”Dad, Mom wants to talk to you.”
Chase paused his meal.
“What is it?”
“My grandmother’s birthday is the day after tomorrow. I want you to tell Sam to go with me.”
Chase replied, Understood.” He then asked,”Anything else?”
Tll pick him up Friday night.”
‘Okay.”
With his agreement, Ashley felt reassured. After a moment of silence, she said, “Thank you.”
“Hmm.”
She didn’t ask if he would go there when she gave him the invitation, nor did she ask him this time. After all, him giving her the boxes meant she would be representing him to give Amanda the gifts. He wouldn’t be there; why should she ask? She didn’t say another word, hanging up immediately.
