Daniel Gill felt like he was caught between a dream and reality, his face pale as he tried to piece together the scraps of information he had. "What do you mean?" he asked, voice barely above a whisper.
The guy sitting beside him watched Daniel with a shake of his head, a little sympathy in his eyes.
Being Mason Bennett’s son-in-law meant Daniel was never going to be Damian Franklin’s favorite. After all the effort he’d put in to climb this high, it looked like the end of the line.
The man clapped Daniel on the shoulder. "Hey, don’t sweat it. You’ve got talent. Doesn’t matter where you go—you’ll bounce back."
Daniel looked at him, desperation flickering in his eyes. "So The Carter Group was never actually Mason Bennett’s to begin with?"
"That’s right." The man, an old-timer in the company and one of the few who still remembered how things really started, sighed. "The Carter Group was founded by Carl Bennett—Mason’s older brother. The real brains of the family."
"But after that car crash, everyone just assumed Carl was gone for good. That’s when Mason stepped in and took over."
He paused, voice dropping. "Turns out, Mason was behind the crash all along. Imagine doing that to your own brother. All for power and money. It’s tragic, really. But hey, at least Carl’s back and alive…"
Daniel’s mind was spinning, a dull ringing in his ears.
Suddenly, he stood up so fast that his chair screeched across the floor, drawing startled looks from everyone else in the room.
He couldn’t care less about their stares. He just bolted after Olivia Bennett and her group.
Outside the Carter Group building, Ethan Carter held Olivia’s hand, Damian Franklin on her other side. As they reached the entrance, hurried footsteps echoed behind them.
Daniel burst out, blocking their way. "Wait!"
His eyes went straight to Olivia.
She looked away immediately.
Daniel’s heart clenched, but he forced himself to turn to Damian Franklin. "Do you know Halley Hill?"
But their last names didn’t match—Hill and Gill.
Her mind raced, thinking back on all the odd things about Daniel’s past. She bit her lip.
The grip on her hand tightened, and she looked up to find Ethan watching her, a flicker of jealousy in his gaze.
She smiled, twisting her fingers to gently tickle his palm, a secret, playful gesture. Her eyes sparkled with mischief.
Ethan’s mood visibly improved, and he squeezed her hand, pulling her closer.
Olivia shook off the thoughts swirling in her head.
She and Daniel were ancient history. Whatever secrets he had, they had nothing to do with her anymore.
"You okay?" Ethan asked quietly.
