Jessie looked wounded. She couldn’t remember him ever talking to her like this before. It was like he’d turned into someone else overnight.
Autumn couldn’t help snapping at Peter. “Seriously, Peter, where did you even get that busted bracelet?”
Peter’s eyes went cold as he glanced at Jessie. “Jessie, why did you take me to a shop that sells fakes?” He’d spent the money, lost his dignity, and now he’d never felt so embarrassed in his life.
“What?” Autumn stared at Jessie in disbelief. “You took Peter there? Why didn’t you just go to a proper auction? It’s classy, it’s safe, nobody gets scammed. Now look what happened. We’ve totally blown things with the main family!”
Their argument drew a small crowd on the sidewalk. Peter noticed a hotel waiter hanging around, clearly eavesdropping on every word. He shot the hotel a dark look. “Let’s go. We’re heading home.”
In the car, Peter gripped the divorce papers tightly. Plaintiff: Eleanor. Reason: Divorce. She really meant it. She was actually divorcing him. It felt like every bad thing that could possibly happen had landed on him today.
Jessie was so upset she refused to ride with them and took her own car. Autumn was busy trying to calm her granddaughter down and get her to sleep.
“Peter,” Autumn said softly, “I feel like ever since Eleanor left, nothing’s gone right for us. You don’t think she’s secretly cursing us, do you?”
Peter could feel a headache coming on. “Mom, please. Don’t start with the superstitions.”
Meanwhile, back at the party, Max finally felt like he could breathe again after getting rid of the annoying guests. The room felt lighter.
Linden had seen everything. He’d come to Marleigh’s birthday too, and he knew exactly what those papers in Peter’s hand were about. He clicked his tongue, honestly surprised that Max would go this far for Eleanor.
The party picked up again, and no one mentioned what had just happened. Upstairs, Hunter pulled his daughter aside.
Hunter’s expression didn’t budge. His voice was all warning. “Katie, I mean it. If you don’t listen, you can explain yourself to your grandfather.”
Downstairs, Max finished making the rounds and finally took a seat beside Linden.
Linden lifted his glass. “So, Max, was that you getting a little payback?”
Max just gave him a cool look. “Why not call it standing up for what’s right, even if it’s family?”
Linden just shook his head, at a loss for words.
