The next morning, Peter wasted no time. He got his lawyer on the phone and had them pull the opposing attorney’s contact info from the court records.
And because the universe apparently had a sense of humor, it turned out to be Linden again.
Linden didn’t bother with pleasantries. “My client is very clear. If Mr. Clarkson wants a divorce, we’ll apply for court mediation. Mr. Clarkson needs to give my client at least half of his assets, then the divorce can happen right away.”
Peter’s lawyer could tell Peter wasn’t actually looking to end things. He tried to smooth things over with Linden. “Come on, they’re still married, they have a kid, and I’ve heard there’s another one on the way. Divorce seems a little drastic, don’t you think?”
Linden just smiled coolly. “My client is giving up custody of the children. Is there any other problem?”
Peter was desperate to see Eleanor, but she had moved out and left no trace. It was like she’d disappeared from the city. He couldn’t find her anywhere.
He was already on edge when his secretary handed him a bill for fifty million. His heart nearly stopped. Was he getting dragged into something else?
Fifty million for a jade jewelry set? Max really didn’t care about spending money.
Peter wanted to scream. “Just pay it!”
If he didn’t, who knew what kind of summons would show up at his door next?
...
When Autumn found out Peter had actually paid the fifty million, she felt sick. The money was gone, the plan had completely fallen apart, and now Eleanor was jumping in, demanding a divorce.
Of all the times to make a scene, Eleanor had to pick now, when everything was on the line.
Autumn took it out on the butler, docking three months of his pay. Who barges into a banquet hall waving a court summons? It was ridiculous. But Autumn knew she couldn’t take her anger out on the main branch of the family. So she unleashed it all on Eleanor instead.
Back when Peter proposed, Eleanor had hesitated. She still had so much she wanted to do with her studies, she wasn’t ready to settle down. It was Juliana who convinced her to get married first, then focus on her career.
But after marriage, especially with a baby on the way, nothing had gone the way Eleanor hoped. Life just didn’t work like that.
“Mom, I’m not taking her side,” Jared said gently. “It’s just, Eleanor’s always been good to me. I can’t help caring about her.”
While they talked, the hospital room door slammed open so hard it rattled the walls. Autumn stormed in, eyes burning with fury as she stared down Juliana.
“What a wonderful daughter you raised. Can’t give us a son, but she sure knows how to cause trouble for this family.”
“Juliana, is this how you raised your daughter? She’s completely out of control.”
Juliana had been about to greet her with a smile, but the words died on her lips. All she could do was stand there and take it as Autumn’s anger crashed over her like a wave.
