“What are you even saying? What did Eleanor do this time?” Juliana asked, looking lost.
Autumn let out a sharp laugh. “Take a look for yourself. She’s got some nerve now. She wants to divorce Peter! I’m telling you, she can get her divorce if she wants, but she’s walking out with nothing. And that baby she’s carrying, plus my granddaughter, she’s not taking either of them.”
“As soon as she gives birth, she can get out of our family for good!”
Juliana’s head throbbed with frustration. She hated the way Autumn talked, but she couldn’t afford to push her too far.
“Hold on. Don’t get so worked up. I’ll call Eleanor,” she said, trying to keep the peace.
Jared’s eyes were icy, though he still spoke with that natural calm of his. “Autumn, don’t get so upset. The doctor said it’s bad for your blood pressure.”
What should have sounded considerate just made Autumn scoff.
“Oh, so now I’m a sick old woman? Are you cursing me?”
“Autumn, who are you calling sick?” Juliana shot back, finally losing her patience. Jared was her biggest weakness, and she rarely snapped at Autumn unless she couldn’t help it.
Eleanor was in the lab when she stepped out to use the bathroom and saw ten missed calls from her mom. She found a quiet spot by the stairs and called back. “Mom—”
Juliana’s voice exploded through the phone, loud enough to startle her. “Eleanor, you get to the hospital right now! Autumn’s here, and this is your mess. You fix it!”
“I never cheated, and I did everything a wife is supposed to do. Why should I leave empty-handed? Your son is the one who’s been sneaking around with Jessie. I have all the photos. Let’s see who actually walks away with nothing.”
Autumn jumped up. “So you’re finally showing your true colors, Eleanor. All that talk about giving up custody… you just want half the money, don’t you? Well, even if the court rules for you, we’ll appeal. We’ll drag this out as long as we have to. You’ll never get free.”
Eleanor’s lips curled into a cold smile. “Sure, go ahead. But who knows? Maybe the court summons and every photo of Peter and Jessie end up online. It’s up to you. Do you care more about your money or your family’s name?”
“You…” Autumn was so angry she could barely speak. She glared at Eleanor. “Are you really going to be this heartless? Don’t you care about your baby?”
Eleanor’s eyes narrowed, her smile turning icy. “I’ve told you over and over. There is no baby. On the day Peter skipped my prenatal check, I lost it.”
