From His Wife to His Uncle's Wife novel Chapter 104

He looked at his mother, his voice full of disbelief. “Mom, how can you say that about Eleanor? Isn’t she your daughter too? Didn’t it hurt you even a little when you said those things?”

Juliana opened her mouth, maybe to explain, and for a split second, guilt flickered across her face. But it vanished almost immediately, replaced by annoyance at her daughter’s defiance.

“Jared, your sister is my child. However I treat her, she has to accept it. That’s how I grew up. You never saw how your grandmother used to hit me.” She waved her hand like it didn’t matter. “It’s my fault for spoiling her. She thinks she’s so special now, just because she married well. Well, watch and see. Peter has money and power. For him, dealing with someone like Eleanor, who has no real background, that’s nothing. Sometimes she needs to fall and learn her lesson.”

Jared just couldn’t understand why his mom was like this with Eleanor. Was it just because Eleanor was a daughter? He didn’t get it, and honestly, he didn’t want to think about it anymore. He pulled out his phone and sent Eleanor a quick message. Deep down, he knew if he didn’t care about her, nobody else would.

On the drive home, Autumn only got angrier. She’d gone to confront Eleanor, ready to let off some steam, but ended up leaving more upset than when she arrived. The thought of her grandson, gone at just three months, made her chest ache. The anger just kept building.

As soon as Autumn walked in the door, she asked the housekeeper if Peter was back yet. No luck. Peter was already on his way out of town for a work emergency. After yesterday’s disaster, Hunter had pulled three major contracts from Peter’s company. Peter was racing to Fairmont to try to save what he could.

That’s when his phone rang.

“Mom, I’m driving. I’m headed to Fairmont. If it’s not urgent, can we talk when I get back?”

“It is urgent. I can’t wait. I need to tell you now. This is serious.”

Peter frowned, wondering what on earth could be more important than his business right now. “What is it?”

“It’s Eleanor. She said she miscarried a long time ago. She killed your son, Peter. With her own hands.”

Peter’s grip tightened on the steering wheel. He’d heard Eleanor say that before, but he’d never believed her.

After hanging up, Peter felt more unsettled than he ever had before. The drive seemed endless. About thirty minutes later, just as his car pulled off the highway, his phone rang again. He picked up, his voice tight.

“What did you find? Is the baby okay?”

Leon’s voice was careful. “Mr. Clarkson, I checked. Mrs. Clarkson did have a miscarriage. That day, at the hospital, she was hit by a cart. They couldn’t save the baby.”

Peter’s mind went blank. His mouth tasted bitter. How could this have happened? The baby was gone.

Suddenly, a loud crash sounded through Leon’s phone.

“Mr. Clarkson? Mr. Clarkson!”
