From His Wife to His Uncle's Wife novel Chapter 110

Eleanor let out a laugh, sharp and almost breathless. “I killed your child? Oh, you mean the baby I lost while you and Jessie were up at Timber Creek, taking in the snow?”

Her eyes, cool and clear, flashed with anger. “No, Peter, you’ve got it all wrong. The person who really killed our baby was you.”

“Do you remember that phone call I made? You were with Jessie, watching the snow, sharing an ice cream. I tried to reach you, but you told me you were busy. Busy with Jessie, busy with your perfect little family. You, your daughter, and Jessie. That’s your real family, isn’t it? What was I to you? Just someone to carry your child?”

Eleanor gave a cold, humorless smile. “Have you ever seen so much blood, Peter? Because I have. That day, I bled and bled.” Her voice rose, trembling with pain and fury. “Your child died because of you. Because you were cold, and selfish, and you left me to face it alone. That was the day I stopped loving you.” Eleanor pulled out a chair and sat, her gaze fixed on him, all emotion drained away. “From now on, I’m done. We’re finished.”

Peter’s breath came fast, his chest tight. “It wasn’t me. You were just careless.”

“How was I the one who was careless?” Eleanor shot back.

She watched his face flush, saw the way he started to come undone, and felt a strange satisfaction. She clapped her hands together, signaling the end of the conversation. “That’s enough. Stop pretending to be the wounded husband. I’m not buying it. I’ll give you one last chance. We split everything we own, fifty-fifty. And you show up tomorrow for the bone marrow match you promised Jared.”

“If you say no, my lawyer will file for divorce based on your cheating. That means you get less. You have until tonight to decide. After that, the offer disappears.”

Eleanor was playing a risky game, but she doubted he’d want this all over the courts. Ever since she asked for the divorce, she knew there was no way he’d walk away with nothing. Her lawyer said as much. All she could do was get as much as she could. She didn’t want his love anymore. She just wanted something real, something she could actually use.

She sat down across from him, her voice softening. “You sweet idiot. Even if I’d told you, we couldn’t have saved the baby. It would have just made you worry. There was no point.”

Tears slid down Jared’s face. “There was a point. When you’re sick, having family by your side makes it easier.”

“I’m sorry, Ellie. I’m just useless.” He wiped at his cheeks. “Don’t listen to him. If he won’t help, then forget the transplant. But you need to go through with this divorce.”

Eleanor narrowed her eyes, thinking. “Jared, just focus on getting better. I promise, I’m not going to let anything stop you from getting what you need.”
