The last time Peter and Jessie saw each other, things didn’t end well. Jessie had thought it over and realized she was partly at fault, but deep down, she just didn’t want to let go of Peter. Now that Eleanor was filing for divorce, Jessie figured if she stuck by him through this mess, he’d never forget how good she was to him.
When Jessie walked in, Autumn barely glanced up. “Jessie, you’re here.” Her tone was cool, almost bored.
But Olga lit up right away. For her, the allergy scare from last time was ancient history. She was too young to think Jessie would ever hurt her on purpose.
“Aunt Jessie, come make crafts with me!” Olga called out.
“Aunt Jessie, can I make you a bracelet?” she added, her eyes sparkling.
Jessie couldn’t help but smile at her. Olga was the easiest one in this house to win over. “Of course, but you have to make it just for me, okay? I’ll get jealous if you make one for anyone else.”
Olga nodded seriously. “Obviously! My bracelets are only for you.”
Autumn picked at her food, lost in her own thoughts, not even pretending to listen to their playful banter. She was much more worried about Peter. Ever since he got out of the hospital, he’d left for a work trip and still hadn’t come back.
Right as Autumn’s worry peaked, the door opened and Peter walked in. He looked completely worn out, his lips pale and his face drawn.
“Jessie, you’re here too,” he said, sounding tired.
Jessie’s heart skipped a beat. “Peter, are you okay? You look terrible.”
“I’m alright. Just tired,” he muttered, rubbing his forehead.
Autumn’s face crumpled with concern. “Peter, you just got out of the hospital. Go change and come eat something. If you want to get better, you have to take care of yourself.”
Jessie’s eyes widened. “Wait. Peter, you were in a car accident? How come I didn’t know?”
Peter and Autumn both fell quiet. Autumn checked to see if Olga was listening, then made a face. “It was a few days ago. And it was all because of Eleanor. She lost the baby, and now that Peter’s fine, she’s making a big deal out of the divorce.”
She patted Autumn’s hand. “I’ll go check on him. You stay here with Olga. It’s fine, I’ve got this.”
Jessie hurried upstairs. Peter was in the study, and the door was open. He looked miserable, and Jessie felt a pang of hurt. For so long, she’d been the most important person in his life. Now this woman was causing such a scene that he barely seemed to notice her anymore. It was like she didn’t matter at all now.
“Peter, you’re still thinking about Eleanor, aren’t you?” she asked quietly.
Peter pressed his lips together, his eyes stormy. “She’s threatening to leak that recording again. She says if I don’t agree to the divorce and help Paola find a bone marrow match, she’ll send it out all over again.”
Jessie’s heart skipped. She hadn’t realized this was about her. “Peter, you can’t let her. Things just calmed down. We can’t let her stir everything up again.”
Peter didn’t want that either, but if he helped with the bone marrow, he’d lose any leverage over Eleanor. The thought of her walking away with half his stuff made him sick. Jessie thought he was just torn up over the relationship, but really, he cared more about his reputation and money than anything else.
Jessie tried to reason with him. “If you don’t help Paola, Eleanor’s just going to want the divorce even more. Maybe you should just give her what she wants. I’ll go with you to the hospital tomorrow, okay?”
