Peter pressed his lips together. “Adam, listen, I just can’t leave right now.”
Adam let out a dry laugh. “Looks like my sister’s been way too good to you.”
Before Peter could say anything else, Adam hung up, leaving Peter’s face even darker than before. Right now, he didn’t have the energy or patience to deal with Jessie. He even caught himself thinking that if Jessie called, he’d marry her the second his divorce was final.
But the call never came. Even after his mom’s surgery was over, his phone stayed silent.
“Doctor, how’s my mother doing?”
“She’s out of danger for now, but we want to keep her here for a couple more days. If everything looks good after that, she should really be in the clear.”
“We’ll need a family member to stay at the hospital,” the doctor added. “Just in case we need someone to sign paperwork or make decisions quickly.”
Peter finally let himself breathe a little. “Of course, Doctor. I’ll stay here.”
Back at home, Jared was smart enough not to mention anything about Eleanor’s court case to his mom.
Juliana finally got the new apartment sorted out. Now, it would only take Jared ten minutes to walk to school. In her head, she grumbled about her daughter. So cheap. Sitting on all that money and still can’t spare a little more for her own mother. Typical. Daughters are useless, she thought. Jared was the only one she could count on.
“Oh, Juliana, what a surprise running into you.”
Juliana’s smile faded the moment she saw who it was. “Oh. Fiona. Hi.”
Fiona used to work with her as a housekeeper at the Goff family’s place. Juliana had moved on ages ago, but Fiona was still there. Juliana hated talking about her days as a maid. To her, it felt like a stain she’d never quite scrub away. She liked to think she and Fiona belonged to totally different worlds now.
“Honestly, Juliana, you’re lucky your daughter married well. Look at me, still working my fingers to the bone for someone else.”
“Just think about it. The Goffs are such an old, respectable family. How could he let something like that happen?”
Juliana’s eyes widened. “It actually went to court?”
“Yeah, that’s what I overheard. Seriously, please don’t tell anyone. I’m begging you.”
“Imagine if your own daughter brought that kind of shame on the family, right in front of a judge. You’d be furious too. And Mr. Goff… well, you know how he is.”
Juliana’s breath sped up. “Fiona, I’ve got to run. I’ll talk to you later.”
Damn it. Was Eleanor really losing her mind in court?
