She really wasn’t ready to see him yet.
Max didn’t take it personally. He totally understood how Eleanor felt and was perfectly happy to wait things out.
Eleanor showed up at her professor’s place, hands full with fancy bird’s nest and shark fin. Tim frowned as soon as he saw the gifts.
“I told you not to bring anything. Just take it back. Seriously, if you bring stuff again, I won’t accept it.”
Laura shot her husband a glare. “Come on, Tim. Eleanor’s just being thoughtful. Can’t you be a little nicer?”
Turning back to Eleanor, Laura smiled kindly. “He’s just worried about you spending money. Next time, just bring yourself. That’s all we need.”
Laura added, “Oh, by the way, a friend of mine is joining us for dinner tonight. Hope you don’t mind.”
Eleanor shook her head. “Of course not.”
She never expected Laura’s friend to be Max’s mom.
Laura laughed. “You can call her Grandma, if you want. She’s about that age, right?”
Marleigh gave a warm, elegant smile. “Honestly, I am old enough. If Max had gotten married sooner, I’d probably have grandkids by now.”
Even though Marleigh joked, she already had a grandson and granddaughter from her other son, Hunter. It wasn’t like she’d never held a grandchild. She just worried about Max and his stubborn bachelor life.
Marleigh used her mother’s last name, while Tim had their father’s, so Eleanor never realized they were siblings. She never would have guessed her professor’s sister was Max’s mom.
“Oh, and Eleanor works at your son’s company. I almost forgot!” Laura said.
Only then did it hit Eleanor. The beautiful, sophisticated woman sitting across from her was Max’s mother. You’d never guess by looking at her. Marleigh looked as young as Autumn, barely seeming old enough to have grown kids.
Eleanor quickly tried to hide her awkwardness. “Mrs. Clarkson, hello.”
Calling her Grandma just felt too weird, so she stuck with the formal greeting, following Laura’s lead.
Marleigh’s eyes sparkled. “Which department are you in? I don’t remember seeing such a pretty young lady at the company before.”
Then she asked, “So, Eleanor, are you married?”
Tim snorted. “Marleigh, she married a real jerk. She’s in the middle of a divorce. By the way, Eleanor, has your court date happened yet?”
Eleanor looked at him, tired but calm. “Yeah, that’s what kept me busy last week. The first hearing is done, now we just wait for the verdict. We’ll see if he tries to appeal.”
Tim rolled his eyes. “He has the nerve to appeal?”
He shook his head. “Just don’t fight for custody. Take half his money and walk. Nothing would annoy him more. And whatever you do, don’t let that mistress get away with anything.”
When Marleigh heard Eleanor’s marriage was wrecked by a homewrecker, she couldn’t help feeling for her.
“Eleanor, you’re better off without him. Once it’s all over, I’ll introduce you to someone way better than your ex. You’ll see.”
Eleanor almost choked. Her boss’s mom wanted to set her up? She could definitely do without that kind of help.
