Olga’s mood changed so fast that Lynn couldn’t keep up.
“Olga, you…”
Before Lynn could process the shift, Autumn arrived with a bowl of bird’s nest soup, and Olga was all smiles, her earlier attitude gone like it never happened.
“Lynn, you have to try this soup!” Olga beamed up at her.
“It’s really yummy!” she added, sounding like any sweet little kid.
Lynn blinked, thrown off by the sudden change. She glanced at the toy box on the floor, then at the little girl grinning like nothing had ever happened, and realized the Clarkson family might be way more complicated than she’d thought.
Autumn bent to pick up the toy box, muttering, “How did this end up on the floor?”
She looked at Olga. “Olga, Lynn bought this for you. It’s that doll brand you love, remember? Did you thank her?”
Olga nodded. “Yes, Grandma, I already thanked Auntie Lynn.”
“Good girl,” Autumn said, ruffling Olga’s hair, clearly pleased.
Sitting across from them, Lynn found her appetite fading fast. The way she looked at Olga had changed. Was this little girl really just four? The way she acted, her attitude and those sharp little looks—it all seemed way older than her years.
While Lynn was still trying to figure out what to make of it, Peter Clarkson came home.
He stopped in the doorway, surprised to see a stranger on their sofa. “Mom, who’s this?”
Autumn’s face lit up. “Peter, this is Lynn Grimm, from the Grimm family.”
“Lynn, this is my younger son, Peter Clarkson, the one I told you about.”
“She had some free time today, so she came over for a visit. Peter, go wash up, then come down for dinner.”
After the meal, Olga grabbed Lynn’s hand.
“Lynn, will you come to the garden and push me on the swing?”
Lynn felt a jolt of nerves. “Um… okay.”
Olga dragged her outside, leaving Peter and Autumn alone in the dining room.
“So, Peter, what do you think of Lynn?” Autumn asked, watching him closely.
Peter’s jaw tightened. “Mom, I’m still married.”
Autumn rolled her eyes. “You won’t be for long. Do you really plan to wait around until the papers are signed before you even talk to someone new?”
