From His Wife to His Uncle's Wife novel Chapter 165

The next morning, Peter Clarkson called Jessie Goff into his office.

“I fell asleep last night. What did you mean by your message?”

Jessie had Peter completely figured out, and she knew it. She understood that what mattered most to him was finding a way back into the Clarkson family. At the last family banquet, Peter had managed to offend just about everyone. Max’s last comment especially had left George with nothing but a bad impression of him.

Jessie smiled and pulled up the chair across from his desk. “Hunter might be the oldest, but he doesn’t really have any power in the family. He doesn’t get to make the big decisions.”

“There are only two real decision-makers in the Clarkson family,” Peter said, his eyes narrowing.

“Exactly. George and his youngest son, Max.”

But Max had always been strangely hostile to him, and Peter still didn’t know why. Their run-in at the mall, then the banquet afterward—Max seemed to go out of his way to target him.

“Max is famous for being difficult and ruthless. Changing his mind about you won’t be easy,” Jessie went on.

Even though she was right, Peter still didn’t want to hear it.

“So you’re telling me the only person left I can win over is George?”

George—his own grandfather. But the fact that his father was born out of wedlock was a sore spot for George. If getting on his grandfather’s good side was easy, Peter would’ve done it by now. Winning George over wouldn’t be any easier than winning over Max.

He felt trapped, stuck with no way forward, no way out.

Jessie gave a soft laugh. “Peter, don’t stress. Just let me finish. Maybe it looks hopeless, but what if you could create your own opportunity?”

Peter squinted at her. “What are you getting at?”

“George is even more old-fashioned than Max. He’s the one who made the rule that no one in the family can break their marriage vows.”

“If anyone does, they lose their chance to inherit. Not just that, they could actually get kicked out of the family. But George also has a soft spot. He’s really grateful to people who help him.”

“And if there isn’t one, sometimes you just have to make it yourself.”

Lately, Eleanor had been buried in work.

She only had time to message Jared every now and then. He was only allowed to use his phone at night, so after dinner and homework, he had maybe half an hour to text her.

Usually, Eleanor made sure to chat with him. Adam’s threats were still fresh in her mind, and she worried Jared might be dealing with something and not telling her.

Her feelings about Jared were complicated. She was upset about their mother’s favoritism, but she still couldn’t stand the thought of Jared being unhappy or mistreated.

Luckily, Jared was turning out to be a pretty good little brother.
