Eleanor was working late again. She was about to text Max when his message popped up first, saying he’d be having dinner at the family house tonight.
Honestly, that was a relief. She still didn’t know how to be around him without feeling awkward. Ever since Marleigh had asked her to spy, she’d felt completely out of place.
“Eleanor, you’re still here?” someone called.
“Yeah, the experiment is almost done. I just want to see the results.” Eleanor didn’t look up from her work.
“Well, we’re heading out then!” Katie appeared in the doorway, giving her a quick, tight-lipped smile. Max had told Katie not to interfere with anything in the lab, but she was clearly still upset about what had happened before.
As Katie left, her eyes flickered with annoyance. She paused at Eleanor’s door, and with a quick glance over her shoulder, she shoved something into the keyhole. Let’s see if Max rushes in to defend you every single time, she thought.
Max arrived at the old family home, walking in with one hand in his pocket. As soon as he opened the door and spotted someone sitting on the sofa, his whole demeanor chilled.
“Max is back,” Hunter said from across the room.
George waved him over. “Max, come here. I want to introduce you to someone.”
Max glanced over, his voice flat. “Dad, there’s no need. Isn’t that the guy who left the family in the first place?”
George gave him a stern look and cleared his throat. “Peter explained that what happened was just a misunderstanding.”
He looked at Max, a little more serious now. “I had an asthma attack in the elevator today. Good thing Peter was there to help me, or who knows what would have happened.”
Max’s gaze was sharp as he studied Peter Clarkson. “Oh, really?” He drew out the words, not bothering to hide his suspicion. “Which elevator did it happen in, Dad?”
George shook his head. “The one at New World Mall. I was meeting an old friend for tea on the eighth floor. Can you believe an elevator in a place that big just suddenly breaks down?”
Max didn’t buy a second of it. What were the chances? The elevator just happened to break, his dad just happened to have an asthma attack, and Peter Clarkson just happened to be there?
Max couldn’t help but scoff. The whole room felt thick with tension.
“Fine, don’t let me stop you. Dad, Mom, I’m not hungry. I’m leaving.”
George’s face clouded over after Max’s blunt exit.
“Let him go. If he wants to leave, let him,” George said, trying to sound unfazed. “Peter, stay. We’ll eat.”
“Dad…” Hunter started, but Marleigh just sighed.
“Let’s eat,” she said softly.
But when it came to the things Peter had said about Eleanor, Marleigh didn’t believe a single word.
