Eleanor drew in a long breath and replied, [Got it. I'm in the elevator. I'll download it as soon as I'm back at my desk.]

Her heart was racing as the elevator hummed its way up. Even after she sat down and reached for her mouse, her fingertips were trembling. She typed in the website address, entered the verification code, and finally downloaded the court decision.

She opened the file and scrolled right to the last couple of pages. There, in a single clear line, it read, “The court supports the plaintiff’s request for divorce.”

Eleanor’s heart soared. It was finally over. She was free. From now on, she and Peter Clarkson were nothing to each other.

She kept reading. “On the matter of dividing marital assets, since the defendant failed to uphold the duty of fidelity, the court awards sixty percent to the plaintiff and forty percent to the defendant.”

Sixty-forty. Eleanor could live with that. At least she was walking away with most of what they’d built during their marriage.

She forwarded the judgment to Linden, then slipped into the stairwell and closed the door behind her. After waiting five minutes to make sure he had time to read it, she gave him a call.

“Mr. Sidler, I’ve finished reading the judgment.”

Linden’s voice was light, almost amused. “Me too. Are you happy with the outcome, Ms. Rolland?”

“I am. Honestly, I was hoping Peter would walk away with nothing, but I know this is already a great result.”

Peter had spent the whole afternoon in back-to-back meetings. When he finally looked at his phone, he saw several missed calls from his lawyer. He called back right away.

His lawyer’s voice was serious. “Mr. Clarkson, the judgment is out.”

Peter’s jaw tightened. “How did it go?”

“The divorce is granted. The assets are split sixty-forty. We get forty percent.”

Peter squeezed the pen in his hand until it snapped. Forty percent. How could he end up with just forty percent?
