Eleanor reached out to an old colleague she still trusted, just to check if Peter Clarkson was still at the office. He was.
After work, she hopped into a cab and went straight to Horizon Collective. She arrived just as the receptionist was packing up for the day, and the woman paused, looking surprised to see Eleanor.
“Uh, can I help you? Who are you here for?”
Eleanor gave her a friendly smile. “Don’t you remember me? I used to work with the executive assistants. I’m just heading upstairs to see someone.”
Recognition finally sparked in the receptionist’s eyes. She remembered now. “Oh, Ms. Rolland, right? Here to catch up with old coworkers? Go ahead, some people are still around.”
Catch up with old coworkers? Eleanor had zero interest in small talk.
It was rush hour, so the elevators were packed and slow. When one finally arrived, a group from her old floor stepped out. Leon spotted her and stopped in his tracks.
He stepped in front of her, frowning. “What are you doing here?”
Eleanor gave him a cold smile. “Move, Leon. I’m going up to talk to your boss about our divorce case. Unless you have something to say about that?”
She squeezed past him, leaving Leon and a cluster of employees stunned. Her words buzzed through the crowd like gossip on steroids.
“Wait, did she just say divorce case with the boss? Leon, what’s going on? What’s her connection to Mr. Clarkson?”
No one at the office had ever figured out that Eleanor was married to Peter Clarkson. That was how little Peter had cared to acknowledge her. Lately, though, everyone was whispering about Peter getting engaged to Jessie Goff. People loved to imagine them as some power couple, spinning stories about Peter waiting years for Jessie to finally say yes.
Leon ignored the questions. He pulled out his phone and called Peter.
Peter waved his assistant away, signaling for her to leave and close the door. Quiet settled over the office, leaving only the two of them face to face, two people who’d once been a couple, if only in name.
Eleanor’s smile was sharp. “Mr. Clarkson, did you see the divorce decree? Got any thoughts? Planning to wait for the court to force your hand, or do you want to settle up now and get this over with?”
Peter shot her a look. “Eleanor, you really think the first trial is the end? I can still appeal.”
Eleanor shrugged, not even trying to hide her boredom. “Sure, appeal if you want. You really want to lose twice? I’m not in any hurry, but I’d hate to see you embarrass yourself in court again.”
She leaned in, her gaze steady. “Funny thing, though. I just heard your assistants talking about your wedding to Jessie Goff. Think the appeals court might be interested in that? Maybe it’ll change how they see things.”
She hadn’t expected to stumble on something so important by just walking through her old office. Even if the divorce wasn’t final, news of Peter’s new engagement would make it obvious he’d been unfaithful.
