Peter’s heart softened at once, and his stern look faded. “Do you know what you did wrong?”

Olga nodded, even though she didn’t totally get it. “I know, Daddy. I was wrong.”

Peter let out a gentle sigh. “That’s enough, as long as you understand. I’m not really mad at you, sweetheart. I just want you to be your best, so more people will like you. The better you are, the more friends you’ll have. You get that, right?”

Olga nodded, her voice soft and sweet. “I get it.”

With that, the tension in the room finally melted away.

Peter smiled and told her to go wash her hands for dinner. As Olga headed downstairs, Jessie squeezed Peter’s hand, her eyes shining. “Peter, why don’t we go register our marriage tomorrow?”

Peter blinked, surprised by how suddenly she brought it up. “Jessie, I haven’t even gone to your family to officially propose.”

“There’s no need. With everything between us, I’ve already decided I’d never marry anyone but you, Peter.”

Her gaze was so tender that Peter felt lost for words. Something in him hesitated, just for a moment.

Jessie’s eyes went watery. “Peter, is it because I’ve been married before? Is that why you don’t want to?”

“How could you think that?” Peter shook his head and opened the door to his study. “Jessie, come here. Look at this.”

Jessie stepped inside and her breath caught. The walls were covered with photos of her, memories from every stage of their time together.

“Jessie, my biggest dream has always been to marry you. If Grady hadn’t met you first, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wished I’d found you sooner.”

Jessie threw her arms around his waist and pressed her face into his neck. “I know, Peter. I know how much you care about me.”
