Back in high school, she and Jordan Gates had been crushing on each other, but they kept it under wraps until after graduation, when they finally admitted how they felt. Their relationship didn’t even last a full year before it fell apart. Turns out, nobody from their old class ever knew they’d dated at all.
People noticed Jordan acting a little sharper than usual tonight, but they just brushed it off and joined in with the teasing.
Yolanda felt her nose sting and blinked away tears. She forced a casual smile, meeting his chilly stare and catching a flash of something darker in his eyes. “Yeah, my boyfriend just dropped me off,” she said.
Someone laughed and called out, “Wow, guess the prettiest girl and the most popular guy are both taken. No chance for the rest of us.”
After that, they didn’t speak again. Jordan sat with the guys, looking distant, while Yolanda was surrounded by her friends, laughing a little too brightly. The two of them were like the North and South Poles—worlds apart, never meeting.
After a couple of drinks, Yolanda’s cheeks were flushed. She leaned over and whispered to a classmate, “I’m just going to the restroom,” grabbing her purse as she stood up.
She’d had enough. All she wanted was to splash some cold water on her face and then make a quiet exit.
But as she stumbled out of the restroom, she slipped and landed right in someone’s arms—a solid chest that smelled faintly of tobacco and fresh cedar. Instantly, she pulled back and looked up. “Sorry,” she muttered.
Jordan let out a short laugh. “Leaving already, ex-girlfriend?”
He gave her a look, his voice cool. “Going to meet up with your boyfriend? That it?”
Yolanda frowned, her patience thinning. “That’s not really your business, is it?”
Jordan just smirked, a little bitter. “Guess not. You were the one who dumped me, after all.”
Yolanda’s eyes went soft, her voice barely audible. “Congratulations on your engagement. I mean it.”
Jordan’s face turned cold. “Save it. I don’t need your wishes.” He walked away, and the warmth that had closed in around her disappeared. Suddenly she felt cold, shivering in place.
…
Linden nursed his drink, his voice low and a little grumpy. “Max, can you get Eleanor to set me up with her best friend sometime?”
