When Jessie Goff walked into the wedding hall, clinging to Peter Clarkson’s arm, her fingers dug into her palm so hard she almost drew blood. The place was beyond anything she’d ever seen, all glitter and glam, the kind of scene she’d only dreamed about. And now Eleanor, who was already on her second marriage, got to live it up like this?
Jessie glared at the couple greeting guests across the room, jealousy burning in her eyes.
Peter looked troubled, his gaze locked on Eleanor. She was stunning in a way that made it impossible to look away, her lips a perfect shade of red, her eyes sparkling as she welcomed everyone with a bright smile. For a moment their eyes met, and then Eleanor quickly looked away. She was avoiding him.
A sharp ache twisted in Peter’s chest. Those smiles used to be his alone. Now she wouldn’t even meet his gaze.
Max noticed too, lifting an eyebrow as he caught sight of Peter standing stiff and awkward, making the air feel heavy.
Jessie tugged at his sleeve, her voice low and annoyed. “Peter, what are you doing?”
Peter blinked, forcing a smile and shoving down his disappointment. “Max, congratulations.”
Max barely nodded, lips twitching in a cold almost-smile. “Thanks.”
The photographer, blissfully unaware of the tension, smiled at them. “Would you all like a photo together?”
Max’s eyes gleamed with mischief. “Sure, why not.”
He turned to Peter. “You and your wife should join us. Let’s get the four of us in one shot.”
Yolanda, watching from the sidelines, sucked in a breath. Trust Max to stir things up. He was practically out to finish off this miserable pair.
Max’s invitation left everyone frozen. Jessie was so angry her teeth nearly chattered.
“Yeah… sure,” she managed.
With Max and Eleanor standing together, their looks were almost unfair. Next to them, Peter and Jessie just looked like they were tagging along, not even close to matching the vibe.
The photographer snapped the photo, then checked the camera. “Looks good. Want a few more?”
Peter’s jaw clenched so tight a vein throbbed at his temple. “No, that’s enough, thank you. Congratulations, Max.” Then his voice softened as he glanced at Eleanor. “Congratulations, Eleanor.”
