Adam had caught pieces of conversation here and there, and with the rumors swirling about the Clarkson family all day, a sinking feeling started to grow in his chest.
“Jessie, I heard someone tried to kidnap a relative of Max’s wife today. That wasn’t you, was it?”
Jessie went pale on the spot. She couldn’t put on a brave face any longer, not in front of Adam, her cousin who’d known her since they were kids.
She started shaking. “Adam, please… I need your help. I never meant for things to go so wrong…”
“If Max finds out, I’m done for. He’ll ruin me.”
Adam felt his heart drop. “Just tell me everything. I want the whole story, no holding back.”
They all knew by now just how dangerous Max could be. Thinking back to what happened with Wesley, Adam finally understood why Clarkson Corporation had come out swinging on social media. It was all to protect Eleanor. And Eleanor herself was nothing like he’d imagined. He never thought a divorced woman could win Max over like that.
Jessie, still trembling, spilled everything. She hadn’t been there in person, but she was terrified the others involved would drag her name into it. As long as there was no solid proof, she wasn’t afraid of suspicion. But if someone slipped up…
Adam took a long breath. “Okay. Wipe your face.”
“Head to the bathroom, fix your makeup, and act like nothing happened. Go back to your seat, put on a smile, and forget about this conversation.”
Adam and Jessie had always been close. Back in school, he’d chased away any guys who tried to bother her. He’d always looked out for her, just like a knight for his princess. This time was no different.
“Let me handle the rest. I’ll clean things up. No one will find out it was you.”
“Or at least, nothing will come out that can actually be traced back to you.”
Jessie looked at him like he’d just saved her life. “Thank you, Adam. Thank you so much.”
She started crying all over again. “I knew you’d be there for me, Adam. You always are.”
