Max glanced at Katie, half-smiling, half-serious. Katie felt totally lost.

“Max, why are you looking at me like that?”

“You’re not thinking it was me, are you?”

Max shrugged, voice low and teasing. “I never said you. Why are you so nervous? I was just wondering where your best friend went. Did she already leave?”

Katie’s heart gave a little jump.

“Max, you can’t possibly think Jessie had anything to do with this.”

He didn’t answer directly. “I never said that.”

George’s brow furrowed. “That… that can’t be, right?”

After all, Peter Clarkson was family now. If Jessie tried to hurt Eleanor, she’d be hurting her own people.

Max slipped his arm around Eleanor. “Everyone’s tired. Let’s go home and get some rest. We’ll figure it all out tomorrow.”

Eleanor left with Max.

In the car, she asked quietly, “Should we go to the police station?”

“No need. They’ve already taken our statements. The detectives were with us from start to finish. There’s nothing more we can add.”

She hesitated. “I had Simon look into things. Do you think Jared could convince Juliana to tell the truth about whoever’s behind this?”

Eleanor shook her head. “It’ll be tough. I really don’t think Jared knew anything about what happened. And as much as Juliana loves him, I can’t imagine she’d confess in front of her own son.” She paused, her voice soft. “What mother would destroy her own image in front of her child? She’ll say she’s innocent, but she won’t admit to anything.”

Jared ended up seeing his mother at the detention center, just as they had expected.

“Mom, how could you do something so reckless?”

After everything, after all the ways she’d hurt Eleanor, Jared couldn’t help but wonder if his mom was even thinking straight.
