Peter Clarkson called Hunter, but he got no answer. He tried Max next, only to hear a busy signal. With nowhere else to turn, Peter jumped in his car and drove straight to The Clarkson Estate.

“Grandpa George, what’s going on?” Peter asked, his voice tight with frustration.

George stroked his beard, not quite meeting Peter’s eyes. “Peter, don’t get worked up. I honestly don’t know anything about this. The company’s under the control of those two brothers now.”

Sure, they were running the company, but even so, no one expected them to turn on their own family. Peter had never even considered that his own relatives might stab him in the back. He’d poured billions into that project without a second thought, not even bothering to look at whether it made sense.

He remembered bragging to the risk management team, telling them this project was going to make Horizon Collective’s value skyrocket. He’d been so sure of himself, so certain of the win. Now, instead of a windfall, all he had was a massive loss.

How was he supposed to accept this?

“Grandpa George, can you at least try calling Hunter and Max? They won’t pick up for me. I deserve an explanation.”

George’s expression turned cold. “Peter, they’re busy. I can’t just snap my fingers and get them on the phone.”

“Why don’t you go home for now? When they have time, they’ll get back to you. Or do you think our family is out to get you?”

Peter’s face shifted through a spectrum of emotions. He knew he’d been played, but all he wanted was a straight answer. He couldn’t just swallow this quietly. He needed to know why.

He took a slow breath. “Alright. I’ll go home and wait for your call.”

Upstairs, Katie was lounging around with nothing to do, but she heard every word her grandfather and Peter said. It sounded like her own father had set Peter up.

She grabbed her phone, ready to call her dad, but paused. She remembered the way Peter and Eleanor had looked at each other the other day, like there was still something between them. Peter Clarkson definitely wasn’t some harmless victim.
