Eleanor just sat there, stunned.

“You’re saying… you like me?”

She almost laughed. That had to be a joke.

Her mind raced to deny it. It was impossible. She and Max hadn’t even known each other before this whole marriage agreement. They were total strangers.

Max just smiled, completely unfazed by her disbelief.

He took her hand and led her away right in front of Shawn Crane, leaving Shawn standing there, watching as Max coolly walked off with her.

Shawn could only mutter, “Is he really trying to show off right now?”

Eleanor still felt dazed as she sank into the car seat.

Max told the driver to head to the exhibition hall, the one from that product launch where he’d first seen her.

When they got out, the place was pitch black, but just standing there brought a rush of memories.

“What is this place…”

Max nodded, then signaled for someone to turn on the lights. The whole hall lit up, exactly like it had been back then.

“Remember now? This is where we first met. You were up on stage, and I was in the audience, just watching you.”

Suddenly, Eleanor was back in that moment, right after she graduated. She’d just joined Peter Clarkson’s tiny R&D team, and this was the first project she’d ever presented.

“We met that long ago?”

She tried to reach back in her memory and could just barely recall a blurry figure sitting in the front row. She’d been so nervous that day, everyone’s faces had blurred together. She didn’t remember seeing Max at all.

“You had a boyfriend back then, though.”

Max grinned, eyes soft. “Mrs. Clarkson, I waited so long for you to be single again. There was never anyone else for me.”

He suddenly dropped to one knee, holding out a ring.

“Let me do this for real, not just as part of a deal. Mrs. Clarkson, will you marry me for real this time? Will you be with me for the rest of our lives?”

Eleanor’s heart skipped a beat. The way he looked at her—so open, so full of hope—left her speechless.
