From His Wife to His Uncle's Wife novel Chapter 50

Every day just felt like one big mess.

Peter had called Eleanor at least ten times since yesterday, and she hadn’t answered once. That had never happened before.

When his phone buzzed in his pocket, he grabbed it right away, hope flickering in his eyes. But when he saw the name on the screen, disappointment settled in. He answered anyway. “Hey, Jessie.”

“Peter, Olga’s been asking for you. Are you coming to the hospital?”

He checked the time. “Yeah, I’ll be there.”

Eleanor was okay, just completely worn out. She didn’t want to take time off right after starting a new job, not when work started again tomorrow. Staying in the hospital just wasn’t an option. So she signed herself out.

That evening, Max showed up at the hospital at eight, carrying a box of food. When he reached Eleanor’s room, he found it empty.

“Well, Max, looks like you missed her,” someone teased.

Max shot Shawn a look, not hiding his annoyance. Shawn just grinned, clearly enjoying himself.

“You were in such a rush to have me admit that patient today. Where’d she disappear to?”

Max slipped a hand into his pocket, his face unreadable. “She left.”

Shawn leaned in. “Hold on, Max. Are you interested in that girl?”

Honestly, Max never got close to any woman. Not even a hint. This was the first time Shawn had seen Max care about someone this much.

But the test results… That girl had just had a miscarriage.

Max let out a short laugh. “You’re wasting your time with these questions.”

With that, he turned and walked away, his long legs making quick work of the hallway.

Shawn clicked his tongue and watched him go.

If Max didn’t want to talk about it, that probably meant he really was interested.

When Peter finally made it to the hospital, Olga was already asleep.

Jessie met him with a pout and a finger to her lips. “Shh, Olga just fell asleep.”

All the anger and frustration he’d been carrying because of Eleanor just faded away.

Without thinking, Peter pulled her into a hug. “Thank you, Jessie.”

Jessie’s cheeks turned pink, her voice small and shy. “Peter, promise me you won’t keep things from me anymore. Okay?”

His voice was gentle. “Okay.”

Neither of them noticed someone quietly watching them from down the hall.

Autumn was just about to climb into bed when her sister called.

“Hey, is Peter home?”

Autumn frowned, confused. “No, he’s not. He took my granddaughter to that school activity.”

“I think something’s up with Peter. I sent you a picture. Take a look.”

“I was at the hospital visiting my father-in-law today, and I saw Peter. Why was he hugging Jessie?”
