Peter didn’t get home until eleven, yet every light in the living room was blazing. He walked in and found his mom sitting on the sofa, looking wide awake.
He paused in the doorway. “Mom, why aren’t you asleep?”
Autumn glanced up, giving him a long look. “How was Olga’s school trip? Did you drive her there yourself?”
Peter nodded, but he looked a little uncomfortable. “Yeah, it went fine. She’ll be back in a couple of days.”
Autumn’s lips twitched. A couple of days? Since when did her son start lying to her?
“Did the school trip end up at the hospital, too?”
As soon as she said it, she noticed the scrape on Peter’s face. She wanted to ask, but held herself back.
Peter hadn’t expected her to catch on. He rubbed his nose, looking embarrassed. “Mom, Olga got pneumonia. She’s in the hospital. I didn’t tell you because I didn’t want you to worry.”
Autumn’s face tightened. “How could you keep something that serious from me?”
“How is Olga now?” she asked.
“She’s okay. Her fever’s gone. Jessie noticed she wasn’t feeling well and took her to the hospital. Mom, you really shouldn’t go there. It’s full of germs. Olga will be home in a couple of days.”
Autumn let out a slow breath. “And your face? What happened?”
Peter looked sheepish. “I just fell. It’s nothing, just a scratch.”
Autumn wanted to ask why she’d heard they were hugging, but stopped herself. Maybe Jessie was just putting medicine on his cut.
“So, where’s Jessie now?” she asked.
Peter missed the suspicion in her voice. “She was at the hospital too. I just dropped her off at home.”
Autumn frowned. “And Eleanor? Her daughter’s in the hospital and she doesn’t care?”
Peter’s face fell. “Mom, she’s pregnant. I didn’t tell her about Olga.”
That didn’t make sense. Eleanor had only left with two suitcases. Why would she lug a huge wedding portrait with her if she was coming back?
Autumn walked into the room, searching all the corners. Maybe Eleanor had just hidden it after a fight.
On a whim, she opened the drawer of the nightstand. Inside, an envelope was lying there.
Autumn’s breath caught. She pulled out the papers and saw the bold letters at the top: Divorce Agreement.
At the bottom, she saw both Eleanor and Peter’s signatures, written in their own handwriting.
They were getting a divorce.
Yet Peter had never said a word to her about it.
So everything Eleanor said was true. Peter really was involved with Jessie, and that was why Eleanor wanted to leave.
